District 9: One man's somewhat juvenile backlash...

The following adjectives can be applied to District 9, most of them retaining much of their accuracy with the prefix "massively":
  • Soulless;
  • Over-hyped;
  • Noisy;
  • Vapid;
  • Juvenile;
  • Racist;
  • Derivative;
  • Glib; and
  • Hypocritical.
But if you'd like to sit through a film that's the equivalent of being shouted at by a teenager for two hours, and then top it off with David Brent's revenge fantasy, be my guest. Everyone else seems to love it.

Zing!

And it looks so good.

It really did. So, I suppose I should add 'dissapointing' to the list...

Ahhhh this is interesting. You are the lone voice of dissent in an otherwise euphoric rapture.

I've not seen it yet. Weirdly I'm even more interested now.

Yep, I'm just like Ghandi.

Sorry to be a stick in the mud, but I kinda like reasons WHY somebody doesn't like a film too ; P

Why do you reckon it's racist, then? That's what I'm particularly interested in, especially as I've read quite a few comments on blogs, forum threads etc praising it for the opposite.

(Haven't watched it myself btw)

Racism, both metaphorical and literal abounds...

The aliens are a paper thin metaphor for Apartheid era South African blacks. They're also stupid, violent and bestial, with one exception.

And literally, the actual black characters are, again with one exception, either gangsters or whores. And the one black character who isn't is so passive and subservient to lead character Ficus, he might as well call him Massa.

Hated it.

Sorry, actually there was one other black character who wasn't a gangster or a whore.

She was a witch doctor.

Seriously.

fuck all of you hippy bastards with your self rightious bullshit. i'll bet NONE of you have ever been to south africa or have any clue as to how the people are here. the movie was a brilliant satire of the aparteid era/recent xenophobia and was not fucking racist. granted the nigerians were portrayed as steriotypes and i could understand if they were a bit upset, but the worst people in the movie were the whites you fucking morons!!! take your hypocritical liberal opinions and shove them up your arses. you have NO right to judge any racial or social aspects of this movie. come to africa, and not just the tourist areas, come to the real nitty gritty south africa and then reevaluate your fucking high-horse opinions. fuck you.

and oli, for your fucking information his name is WIKUS, not 'ficus'. you know nothing about this country yet you love to sit there and judge. go to hell. oh and sorry, what about all the blacks in the movie like thomas and fundiswa and the local resisdents who complain about the aliens? are u saying that the movie is racist towards them? or do YOU only notice blacks when they are associated with something bad and take no notice of whites when they do something horriffic? maybe there's a little hint of racism emanating from your comments huh? wanker. pull your head out of your arse.

This movie is more Important brilliant satire of the apartheid then just a regular one. anyhow, if we're looking on the movie as a movie only, without regarding its plot and inner issues - it is quite good movie, specifically for the fact that it made mostly by south Africans film makers.

give me a break. you're resisting just to resist. read about district 6 in south africa. then maybe you'll actually comprehend the movie.

this is what a director gets for making a movie where there's a deeper meaning.

Responding only to the reasonable fellow going under the name of WatchMovies: a lot of people have put this forward to me. Personally, I think it's impossible to make a movie (or any piece of literature, theatre etc) without subtext - even if its not intended, it will be there as a result of the creators' prejudices.

However, putting that aside and considering the movie as if it were created in a vacuum: I think the director shows some flair for action if he can be convinced to calm down a little and not throw every trick he knows at the screen, as I felt was the case here. I'm not a big fan of writer directors in general, as I think you have a flair for one or the other; usually people are better at directing than writing (Neil Marshall, for example) and others better at writing than directing (step up, Kevin Smith). I'd potentially watch something directed by Blomkamp, but not if he also wrote it.

I just don't agree. Just because characters in a movie are rescist, that doesn't equate to the film itself being so. And as others have said, it's a satire. The aliens are seen from a human POV so of course they appear stupid etc.

I thought the film was very well-written, perfectly directed and vrilliantly directed. It's about time the less high profile issues in the world were brought to light.

But then you're intitled to your opinion and I can understand the issues you had with the film. I just don't agree with them, that's all.

*brilliantly.

Note: my dad grew up in South Africa and coming out of the cinema, he merely had this to say:
"Wow......that's exactly how it was!"
